Mahjong Game Nights: A Living Tradition

You are cordially invited to a special afternoon of culture, history, and gameplay set within the Chinese Pioneers exhibition at the San Bernardino County Museum.

Before Mahjong became a staple of American game nights in the 1920s, it journeyed across the Pacific in the hands of Chinese immigrants. As these pioneers built new lives in the American West—including here in the greater San Bernardino County region—they carried traditions that fostered connection, memory, and community. Mahjong became one of those bridges.

Today, that story continues.

Join us for a guided, two-hour Mahjong experience led by Brenna Gibbs, who will introduce the modern American style while honoring the game’s cultural origins and evolution. Whether you are completely new or looking to refresh your skills, this session offers a welcoming and thoughtfully guided way to learn.

What to Expect

This comprehensive beginner lesson will give you the confidence to sit down and play. Participants will learn:
The history and cultural significance of Mahjong
How to identify suits, dragons, and winds
How to read a Mahjong card
Basic strategies for building a winning hand
