DESCRIPTION:The San Bernardino County Museum Association announces its eighth annual Bucky Ball taking place on Saturday\, May 13\, 2023\, at 5:30 p.m.\n\nThe Association is the fundraising\, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that supports the San Bernardino County Museum and its high desert branch\, the Victor Valley Museum. The fundraising event supports the Museum’s mission of developing appreciation and sparking curiosity in regional cultural arts\, history\, and natural and earth sciences through exhibits and educational programming.\n\nThis year\, the lively event will be held in the outdoor courtyard of the San Bernardino County Museum where guests will be able to reconnect and engage in conversations celebrating the Museum’s service to county families and support for increasing the number of youth pursuing art and science education and careers. As in the past\, the event will include a social and silent auction of unique items including jewelry\, excursions\, and more.

SUMMARY:Seeds: Nature's Artful Engineering Exhibit Opening
DESCRIPTION:Seeds: Nature’s Artful Engineering is an exhibit vividly portraying the incredible diversity\, ingenuity and beauty of seed dispersal mechanism of plants native to California. Seeds and their dispersal mechanisms are one of the final stages in the evolutionary biology of flowering plants. Against many\, many odds they are the final step in ensuring the survival of plant life. The exhibit is based around 30 + high-resolution\, close up photographs of the seed structures and dispersal mechanisms of California native plants taken in the wild and in garden settings by Northern California plantspeople and naturalists\, John Whittlesey and Jennifer Jewell.

SUMMARY:Handle with Care Exhibit Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Handle with Care\, a special project of the MexiCali Biennial program\, Land of Milk and Honey\, exhibit researches and explores the use of the Opuntia\, a genus in the family of Cactaceae that includes the prickly pear cactus (nopal)\, as an alternative resource in the struggle against climate change. By exploring the historical\, cultural\, and biological uses of the cactus\, alternative ideas for its use present themselves to help mitigate the effects of weather-related phenomena due to climate change. \nWe invite our visitors to a FREE exhibit opening reception on Saturday\, February 4th from 5-7pm. Abe Sanchez\, from Chia Café\, will be doing a nopal tortilla demonstration. \nThe museum is accessible to persons with disabilities. Parking is free.

DESCRIPTION:Travel back in time with the San Bernardino County Museum\, in partnership with the Old Spanish Trail Association\, Agua Mansa Chapter\, the Spanish Town Heritage Foundation\, and the Native Daughters of the Golden West Grand Parlor as we venture across the Old Spanish Trail on Oct. 1\, 2022 at the Agua Mansa Pioneer Cemetery. Regular admission applies.\n\nJoin us for an adventurous day which will include walking tours of a mock Old Spanish Trail around the cemetery\, live entertainment along with demonstrations\, and delicious food.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for Cosmic Nights with the High Desert Astronomical Society (HiDAS) featuring telescope viewing. The event takes place outdoors\, weather permitting\, and guests are advised to wear comfortable clothing and shoes. Museum galleries will be open during the event and regular admission applies.\n\nBased at the Luz Observatory in Apple Valley\, HiDAS was formed to provide trained\, volunteer astronomers to operate and maintain the Center’s astronomical equipment. The evenings feature telescope viewing\, an opportunity to discuss astronomy with the telescope operators\, and visitors are also encouraged to bring binoculars or set up their own telescopes.  Tickets can be purchased in advance here.
