SUMMARY:Dome Talks Speaker Series featuring Riley Black
DESCRIPTION:Dome Talks are back! During this summer series held in our iconic dome\, authors\, and scientists from across the region share their work\, research\, and ideas in an informal\, engaging setting. Topics span science\, history\, and the world around us\, offering fresh ways to think about big questions\, from our place in the universe to the forces shaping life on Earth. Dome Talks will take place in the Fisk Gallery. \nThursday\, June 11\, 2026\nRiley Black\nWhen the Earth Was Green – Tales From Prehistory’s Magnificent Plants\nIf you want to understand the shape of life on Earth\, look to the plants. In this talk based upon her bestselling book When the Earth Was Green\, science writer Riley Black will take you back hundreds of millions of years to forests\, swamps\, and grasslands where plants deeply influenced the evolution of life on our planet. The botanical life of the deep past gave the largest dinosaurs their shape\, created parts of the fossil record through oozing resin that trapped insects\, and formed dense jungles that led our own ancestors to evolve forward-facing eyes and opposable thumbs. Plants of the past represent more than just an ancient garden. They have been longstanding evolutionary partners whose stories we can still touch today. By the end of this talk\, you won’t look at plants the same way again. \nRiley Black is the bestselling and award-winning author of The Last Days of the Dinosaurs\, When the Earth Was Green\, and many other books about ancient life. Her reporting on the latest fossil discoveries has appeared in publications including National Geographic\, Smithsonian\, Science\, and more\, and Riley’s been a frequent guest on programs such as NOVA\, Science Friday\, and All Things Considered to discuss what’s new in paleontology. In 2024\, Riley was awarded the Friend of Darwin Award by the National Center for Science Education for her writing and outreach. \nTickets are first come first serve. Purchasing ahead on Eventbrite is encouraged. \nGeneral Admission – $20\, plus processing fees \nMembers – $17\, plus processing fees \nParking is free\, and the museum is accessible to persons with disabilities.

SUMMARY:STEAM Outdoors with Sprout and Blossom: Pumpkin Palooza
DESCRIPTION:June STEAM Outdoors: Pumpkin Palooza\nPumpkins may be a fall favorite\, but they begin their journey in early summer. Join Gloria from Sprout and Blossom in the STEAM Outdoor Classroom for Pumpkin Palooza\, a hands-on gardening experience designed for children and their families. \nIn this engaging outdoor session\, young learners will discover how pumpkins grow—from seed to vine—and why timing matters when planting. Participants will explore soil\, sunlight\, watering\, and pollination while learning what it takes to nurture a thriving pumpkin patch. \nThrough guided activities and observation\, families will gain a deeper understanding of plant life cycles and the science behind growing seasonal crops. \nSTEAM Outdoors invites children and families to step outside and explore the living world through hands-on learning and creative discovery. SBCM is excited to partner with Sprout and Blossom for this monthly program that connects science\, nature\, and art through lessons on gardening\, food systems\, insects\, and the beauty of the natural world. Each session encourages curiosity\, care for the Earth\, and an understanding of how people and nature are deeply connected—an essential chapter in the story of us. \nSTEAM Outdoors takes place once each month and is offered in two sessions: \n\n10:30–11:15 a.m.\n11:30 a.m.–12:15 p.m.\n\nParticipation is free with general museum admission. Space is limited to 20 children per session and is available on a first-come\, first-served basis.

SUMMARY:Sensory Hours | Animal Tracks\, Biodiversity Cart
DESCRIPTION:Sensory Hours | June 2026\nAnimal Tracks Activity | Hall of Biodiversity\, Bio Cart\nJoin our educators in our Hall of Biodiversity as they facilitate our biology cart where you can feel animal pelts\, look closely at animal skulls\, teeth\, and scat! Learn more about identifying animal tracks through our animal track print craft and kinetic sand play. \nSensory Hours offer a calmer way to experience the San Bernardino County Museum. During this time\, lighting is softened and the museum environment is quieter to create a more comfortable\, low-sensory setting for visitors who prefer a gentler museum experience. \nSensory Hours are especially welcoming for individuals with sensory sensitivities\, including those on the autism spectrum or with sensory processing differences\, but they are open to anyone who enjoys exploring the museum in a more relaxed atmosphere. \nEach month\, the museum’s education team hosts hands-on sensory activities in a different exhibit hall. These guided experiences may include tactile exploration\, art activities\, or opportunities to interact with natural materials connected to the museum’s collections. Activities vary each month and are designed to encourage curiosity\, discovery and playful learning in a supportive environment. \nAdmission:• $10 adults• $8 military or seniors• $7 students• $5 children ages 6–12• Free for children five and under• Museum members are free \nParking is free\, and the museum is accessible to persons with disabilities.
